How to Set Social Media Boundaries as a Mom

Alright, mama, let’s be real. Social media is like that bag of chips you open intending to eat just a few—you blink, and suddenly it’s gone, crumbs everywhere, and suddenly it's midnight. Sure, scrolling through your feed can be a fun way to laugh at the absurdity of motherhood through memes, but let’s face it: social media can also turn from a sweet escape into a full-blown stress-fest before you even know what hit you. Ugh, no thanks. I've never felt WORSE for taking a break from my phone or spending less time on social media.

Why You Need to Put Some Boundaries on That Scroll

Listen, social media is a double-edged sword. On one side, it keeps us connected and gives us a laugh. On the other side, it’s a ticking time bomb of unrealistic expectations, endless comparisons, and a flood of information that makes your brain want to tap out.

Here’s the deal: when we let social media take over, it can lead to feelings of inadequacy, anxiety, and stress. And trust me, all that negativity doesn’t just vanish when you finally put your phone down. It can mess with your sleep, too—because who can drift off into dreamland after doom-scrolling late into the night? Spoiler: no one.

Let’s Get Practical—How to Put Social Media in Its Place

  1. Set a Social Media Curfew 📵: It’s like bedtime for your phone. Pick a time—an hour or two before you actually hit the hay—when you’ll log off for the night. Instead of scrolling, try reading, meditating, or just enjoying the peace and quiet. Your brain will thank you.

  2. Limit Your Daily Usage ⏳: Use that nifty screen time tracker to see how much time you’re actually spending on social media. Set a daily limit, and stick to it. You might just find yourself with extra time to do something that actually relaxes you.

  3. Curate Your Feed ✂️: Follow people who lift you up, and don’t be shy about unfollowing or muting accounts that stress you out or make you feel like you’re not enough. Your feed should be a source of inspiration, not pressure.

  4. Create “No-Phone” Zones 🚫: Designate certain areas in your home where phones are off-limits—the dinner table, your bedroom, or during playtime with the kiddos. I promise you'll never regret being MORE present.

  5. Be Intentional with Your Time 🎯: Before you open an app, ask yourself why you’re doing it. Are you looking for something specific, or just bored? Being mindful of your intentions can help you avoid falling into the scroll trap.

  6. Focus on Real-Life Connections 👯‍♀️: Let’s not forget the people who are physically right in front of us. Prioritize face-to-face interactions over virtual ones, because real-life relationships are what really fill your cup.

Why This Matters

Look, I definitely have moments in the day where I just want to turn my brain off and scroll, and that's ok! Being aware of this though and limiting the time, instead of just endlessly scrolling is so important. By setting boundaries with social media, you’re not just reclaiming your time—you’re reclaiming your sanity. You’ll likely notice that you’re in a better mood, have more energy, and actually sleep better at night. And holy moly, you might find that you have time for other stuff you've been putting off like a quick workout, reading a book, or something else that fills your cup!
